Beata’s wallpaper and fabric samples, sitting so prettily on our work desk, have been continually caressed both by us as well as anyone popping in for the last three weeks. Which really isn’t that surprising when you see these babies. Think: Colourful marbleized velvet, mesmerising prints and a colour palette that takes us straight into the heart of Beata’s (regularly ‘regrammed’) world on Instagram (which believe me when I say, you’ll desperately want to dive in to each and every room).
Apart from being ranked as one of the top 100 Designers and awarded last year’s House & Garden Interior Designer of the Year Award – the fact that we have been obsessing for months over the Farm Girl Cafe interiors, all things Scandi and ‘that’ mural painted on the walls of Beata’s twin room – added to how thrilled we were to catch up with Beata Heuman herself…
TELL US ABOUT YOUR DESIGN STUDIO AND HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT?
I had an amazing time working for Nicky Haslam for almost 9 years and as I was approaching 30 it was time to spread my wings! It was the right time and I haven’t looked back. Having your own company is at times a little nerve-wrecking, especially in the beginning, but I have a lovely team who cares about it (almost) as much as I do and my husband is also very supportive. Five years down the line and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve achieved so far and I’m very excited about the work we’re doing at the moment.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
I have a 2 year old and 5 month old so I wake up early to get them up and spend some time with them before I leave for work. If I have time I have breakfast at home or I grab a naughty croissant on my way to work – there is an amazing French Bakery on the way called Patisserie Saint-Anne. My studio is 5 minutes walk from home and I normally get in around 8:30. Days are very varied, I like it when I can spend a day focusing on ongoing projects and our product collection but we very often have client meetings and site visits and there is always a lot going on. I work all day, often having lunch by my desk and leave around 5:30 for my children’s bath time.
HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?
My morning coffee is a gigantic cappuccino – literally like a soup bowl full. I also tend to have what I refer to as a ‘slutty nes-caf’ after lunch.
WE LOVE YOUR ‘EVERY ROOM SHOULD SING!’ PHILOSOPHY – HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE THIS?
It’s usually achieved by adding a bit of everything in terms of colours, and also making sure the scheme isn’t too heavy. Sometimes we use stronger colours on walls but it’s important to have a lightness to every space so you need to get that balance right. Lighting is key.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN SOURCES OF INSPIRATION?
I look a lot to old design books and magazines. I have saved every World of Interiors I have ever bought and I constantly refer back to them. Instagram often provides ideas too.
FAVOURITE ITEM IN YOUR HOME RIGHT NOW?
We developed our Snow Drop Rise and Fall Pendant for over our dining table and I really love the light it casts and the fact that you can bring it up and down for different moods. We add products to our little collection whenever we feel we have designed something quite special – we do bespoke bits of furniture and bespoke lighting for clients all the time.
FAVOURITE PROJECT SO FAR?
We have had the pleasure of working on so many lovely projects over the years but one of the highlights is the beautiful house we did on Nantucket which was completed last summer. It was so exciting travelling to a completely new place and working on such a special property. The house dates from late 18th century and has many original details left intact, something quite rare in America. We had a wonderful team on site who were extremely knowledgeable and respectful of local, historical craftsmanship.
We are working on lots of design projects in London, a complete refurb of a beautiful old townhouse in Rotterdam and a new build waterfront house in Hamburg. We’re also thrilled to be adding quite a few fun new products to our collection.
