Founded in 2016, by Byron Bay-based Juliette Harkness and Emma Nelson, Deiji Studios is the answer to all your sleepwear-that-you-can-wear-out-and-still-look-darn-good-doing-so prayers. As far as we’re concerned, the more snooze time the better. As well as pyjamas, they make kimono-style robes, bed linen and dresses too – all in the softest stone washed fine French linen. Ahhh is this not just the dream?
We talk to Founders, Juliette and Emma about how it all came about and what their typical days comprise of…
TELL US ABOUT DEIJI STUDIOS AND HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT?
J: We started Deiji Studios almost 3 years ago in a small single garage with linen bedding, that organically turned into sleepwear/Loungewear, we wanted to create slow fashion and simplify the way we dressed.
WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE BRANDS NAME?
E: We prefer to keep that one a mystery these days 😉
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
J: Usually a pretty quick start with the kids up super early, getting the lunches ready trying to finish my morning coffee whilst replying to emails. We either work from the office or home, you will find me mostly always on the phone or computer… There isn’t a typical day, it just is in general chaos, but crazy beautiful chaos.
E: They’re never typical at the moment, I have no routine and tend to spend my days ticking boxes left open for weeks!
HOW DO YOU TAKE YOUR COFFEE?
J: Never the same, I am always going from strong lattes to long blacks, I also like changing up my local coffee shop or just making my own at home.
E: I don’t anymore as it doesn’t love me – but most days a coconut chai.
WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN SOURCES OF INSPIRATION?
J: So many things, colour, texture, a feeling or mood. For the bed it is often furniture or objects that inspire us. I feel like inspiration will always come to us when we least expect it or when we are not in search of it.
TOP TIPS FOR A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP?
E: Since having kids I have only had a full nights sleep a few times in the last 3 years so I’m probably not the best person to ask… I’ll often listen to a podcast or meditation before I go to sleep to wind down.
FAVOURITE DEIJI PIECE?
J: It’s a hard one for me to pick but I always go back to the 01, I love layering this set through Winter.
E: Probably the 04 black silk dress
WHAT’S NEXT – BUSINESS OR PERSONAL – FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR?
J: We are in the stages of playing around with new fabrications and designs with Deiji, with personal – trying to simplify as much as I can, my partner always says to not spread myself too thin, so I aim to take this saying on board as much as I can.
E: Hopefully a trip home to the snow in NZ in August, and enjoy the beach life for the rest of the year here in Byron. For Deiji we have so many new fabrications, styles, products in the works, so we will have to wait and see which ones land, but it’s always a fun journey conceptualising them!
